Join the Coalition of Immokalee Workers for a demonstration in support of the Fair Food Program. Students will march alongside Farmworkers and their families in support of a boycott of the Wendy’s fast food chain.
Unlike other major corporations in the United States, Wendy’s has refused to support the Fair Food program, a farmworker-led program that supports human rights and better working conditions for farmworkers.
For more than two decades, the Coalition of Immokalee Workers has been a source of positive change in the industrial agriculture sector. The CIW has worked to end sexual harassment and exploitation in the fields, combatted modern-day slavery on farms in the United States, improved working conditions, and increased wages. College students standing in solidarity with farmworkers have been important allies in the fight for farmworker rights.
Please report to the HSC Pavilion located on the back end of Landon Hall and the soccer field at 10:00 am. The closest gate entrance is on NW 115th and 1st Ave. The straight SW path leading from the gate entrance will bring you directly to the Pavilion covered area.
The event will include an orientation, convening in a local park, demonstration, and celebration. The demonstration will be peaceful and follow all laws and safety guidelines.
Participants should eat a hearty breakfast before arrival and bring a full, reusable water bottle. Wear a Barry shirt, comfortable walking shoes, and protection from the elements (a hat, sunglasses, and light jacket are recommended).
We recommend that you carry a small backpack or shoulder bag to carry your personal items, as you will need your hands free to carry signs and chant cards. Please note that the activity involves walking on paved surfaces for approximately 2 miles.
